PET FOOD RECALLS UNDERWAY
In an effort to protect pet food manufacturers, the last
time a widespread contamination issue was discovered,
countless animals were left to die without proper
notification of the dangers. If your pet is exhibiting
unusual symptoms, immediately withdraw any and all
commercial petfood and switch to rice flavored with
pieces of meat -- no canned broths [boullion is also on
the recall list]and contact your vet or other animal
practitioner. Keep bags of petfood with lot numbers and
expiration dates for recall review...

Having created a problem with feral camels, Australia now
wants to destroy them using the most outrageous method
imaginable...
Chickens, reportedly as bright and eager to please
as canines,
are being slaughtered en masse, fed alive into
grinding machines, simply because they're male -- just
to provide cheap eggs for a very large market.
When an internet video
depicting 'maceation' went viral, people began
asking questions: How did
the food production industry in the U.S. become so
inhumane?
The group, called
MERCY FOR
ANIMALS, slipped into a chicken 'factory' and
published the
resulting video on the Internet and, the public --
those that could bear to watch it -- collectively
groaned.
The story has gone viral, with many animal welfare
groups raising their voices as well, seeking sound
solutions to the needless and brutal practices utilizes
at the 'factories' responsible.
One animal welfare group,
Animal People, is among those
working to raise awareness: but it will take the work of
many to turn around a program that the industry, behind
closed doors, has held as 'acceptable.'
The American Veterinary Medical Association, in fact,
endorses this shocking and gory method of killing the
fluffy, bouncing chicks, in spite of the obvious cruelty
of the practice and the rising voices of complaint. Many
DVMs have made it a point to publicly challenge
the position of the AVMA saying, "Although the DVMA has
publicly deemed this practice humane, it is not."
Why would the AVMA lend their approval to something so
horrific that those working in the factories
immediately show signs of emotional distress?
After all, aren't these the
very people who are entrusted with the responsibility of
explaining to others what is -- or isn't --
humane?
Recently, when the endorsement of this practice resulted
in ranchers being reported for animal abuse when
witnesses saw them shoving chickens into a wood chipper,
the AVMA again refused to act.
Further, the U.C Davis Center for Animal Welfare has
also refused to condemn the practice.
This issue -- and others recently exposed -- have caused
the public view of such previously respected entities to
lose credibility and have brought about the development
of a wide range of organizations, formed to address
issues of animal cruelty throughout the U.S. and beyond.
Why?
The multi billion dollar
farming industry is essentially a cartel that has paid
off those whose responsibility it was to prevent this
type of abuse and cruelty on a massive scale from
occurring," stated Diedra McClintock, activist and
author.
"They know what they are doing and it's part of
the culture of death that the U.S. has become
known for. They kill anything and everything without
conscience. When they are done with healthcare reform,
well -- let's just say it won't be pretty."
Celebrity endorsements and celebrity involvement have
become commonplace, with many lending their names, faces
and titles to educational endeavors dedicated to
bringing an end to animal abuses -- including those used
as food sources.
Still, until the public is aware, demand for reform will
be limited.
"One need only review the video to see that secrecy has
prevented public outcry until now," stated Tracy Callum,
volunteer for MERCY. "No one that watches this
video can make a case for maceration. It's a total
nightmare: a travesty against animals."
Hy-Line,
the Iowa Hatchery exposed in the video, posted a
disclaimer on their website stating maceration is an
'accepted industry practice.' [Click

According to food safety investigator Carla
Lawler, the situation requires massive overhaul of a
system that's not only cruel but also horribly unhealthy
for those that are consuming these animal products.
"It is no wonder that these products have become
so unhealthy as to make eating them virtually
unthinkable," Lawler stated. "It's impossible to escape
the negative ramifications of consuming what are the
byproducts of a corrupt system that's rife with such
abuse that most of the animals are diseased."
If the HYLINE.COM
spokesperson's comments are true and these males are
available to ship, the SOLUTION IS SIMPLE:
There are food banks throughout the U.S. going broke for
lack of foodstuffs to offer.
Due to the difficult financial times, many people
are out of work while others struggle with restricted
incomes.
Why not allow people to take and raise these chicks:
small farms, seniors, impoverished families, 4H Clubs,
even schools -- and provide the chickens for food to
those in need, utilizing food banks and other
organizations for distribution. The impact on the
environment is lessened, and the chicks can actually be
humanely destroyed at the end of their lives.
50 to 60 years ago, it was commonplace for families to
order 100 chicks, pay a small fee and raise them for
food. The cost of crating and shipping, quite
inexpensive, will be borne by the consumers and will
actually increase the profit line for those
companies who are currently pushing helpless chicks into
the blades of the macerator.

'factories' into reasonable treatment treatment of

When
Quartzsite's animal shelter started, it was expected
to meet the growing needs of the community.
For reasons still not completely understood, the
shelter failed. It is currently closed, though
people are still delivering animals to the facility
-- perhaps without knowing it's no longer receiving
displaced pets.
It's believed the shelter will eventually reopen:
but will not be taking felines. The Animal Refuge
Thrift Store is not part of the operation and has no
solutions for placement.
Although the many questions concerning the shelter
operation remain unanswered, we are hoping to have
the story. In the meantime, the Citizen's Coalition
has an Animal Welfare Committee in place to assist
those homeless animals in this region. Questions?

Bennett's letter of resignationwas
presented to the council Wednesday, August 27th, and
formally accepted at a special meeting held
Wednesday, August 28th. Many spectators at Tuesday's
meeting indicated they found the diatribe presented
against Mayor Bennett offensive, even though the
case against Bennett -- presented without
interruption by Daniel Field-- did not appear to be
without merit.
Bennett officiated during the first part of that
Tuesday council meeting and excused himself for the
duration of the session, leaving the room to the
remaining members of the council and Town
Manager/Attorney Daniel G. Field, to discuss the
case against him in open session, with many
townspeople in attendance. He did not attend
Thursday's meeting when his resignation was
presented for acceptance.
